The Wiz - 2010

Picture
The Wiz was the second musical St Andrew's Amateur Theatre Company performed. This musical had (and remains) the largest cast we ever had participate in a musical. With over 125 cast members, this was without a doubt a huge show and a massive success.

Synopsis:

A young girl named Dorothy is whipped away from her Aunt in Kansas by a large storm, and set down in the Land of Oz. After being inspected by Munchkins, she is sent on her way to see The Wiz by the Good Witch of the North, with a present of ruby boots. She follows the Yellow Brick Road, collecting a scarecrow with no brain, a tin man with no heart and a lion with no courage, all of whom want to see The Wiz.

Surviving fights against Kalidah people and nearly losing the lion in the Poppy field, they arrive at the Emerald City. The quartet are told to wear emerald glasses and are laughed at by the citizens, who, after seeing Dorothy's shoes, send them to The Wiz. All four plead their cases to the mighty Wiz and he agrees to help them, only if they will dispose of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The companions reluctantly go to Evillene's castle, where she has enslaved the Winkie people. They are caught by Evillene's Winged monkeys and while Scarecrow and Tinman are being horribly tortured, Lion and Dorothy are forced to do chores around the castle. After Evillene tortures Lion to get Dorothy to give her the ruby boots, Dorothy becomes angry and throws a bucket of water over the witch, melting her. The Winkies rejoice in their freedom, helping the friends return to see The Wiz.

The four find the Wiz to be a fraud, and after telling them how he became to be ruler of Oz, admits being false to his people. He shows Tinman, Scarecrow and Lion that they have already achieved what they were looking for, and as Dorothy is loosing all hope, Addaperle arrives, telling Dorothy of Glinda. Glinda shows Dorothy the magic in the shoes, and, waving her friends goodbye, Dorothy clicks her heels together three times, returning home.
